Description

“Helsinki graffiti” was published on the Night of the Arts in August 1998. It is the first Finnish-language artwork of graffiti. Both editions of the book sold out immediately. The book became a bible for Finnish graffiti enthusiasts and a collector’s item, which has been made into bootleg copies.

“Helsinki graffiti” is a popular non-fiction book that tells about the world of graffiti from the perspective of graffiti artists. The book covers the history of Finnish graffiti from the early 1980s until 1998, when the City of Helsinki launched a “Stop bumps” campaign to defeat graffiti.

Now the cult book is available again. The 25th anniversary edition is a hardcover edition made with high-quality materials and finished with printing technology. In addition to the original content, the book contains more than 60 previously unpublished images from the 1980s and 1990s. Deputy Mayor Paavo Arhinmäki writes in an extensive personal postscript about what happened to graffiti in the Helsinki region after 1998: from dramatic years of zero tolerance to legal graffiti walls and museum exhibitions.
